Sinus Lift Bone Grafts

The key to success of a dental implant is the quantity and quality of bone that remains after the loss of a tooth. Due to its proximity to your sinuses, the upper back jawbone is regarded as one of the most difficult areas to successfully place dental implants. Why is this so?

Expanded Sinuses

Sinuses essentially function as airways allowing air to pass, much like an empty room. Some of the roots in your upper teeth extend up into your sinuses. When these teeth are removed, only a thin wall of bone separates your sinus cavity from your mouth. As this bone heals following tooth removal, the sinus expands in size, further reducing the bone available for placement of dental implants. If a dental implant is placed in such a location, much of the implant will be surrounded by the hollow sinus instead of strong supporting bone! Fortunately, Dr. Paris and Dr. Shumaker can correct this problem with a sinus lift procedure.

Sinus after bone grafting

With a sinus lift procedure, bone is added to the sinus to increase support for dental implants. The procedure takes less than two hours and may be accomplished with simple local anesthetic, just like when you get a filling on a tooth.

Dr. Paris and Dr. Shumaker use state-of-the-art piezoelectric surgical technology when performing sinus lifts. This technology improves the success rate of sinus lifts, reduces surgical time, and reduces complications.

The bone used for ridge augmentation procedures is usually bottled bone obtained from an accredited tissue bank, preventing the need (in most cases) to take bone from other areas of your body. In some severe cases Dr. Paris and Dr. Shumaker may need to take some of your own bone from another area inside your mouth, but usually this is not necessary.

After Sinus Lift Bone Graft and Implant Placement

Bottled bone grafts are extremely safe and have been in use in dental surgery for over 40 years without one single documented case of disease transmission. Tissue banks carefully screen donors and then extensively test and treat the bone graft materials before they are packaged and distributed. You can rest assured that Dr. Paris and Dr. Shumaker use only bone materials from tissue banks accredited by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB).

If you are interested in a dental implant and/or have been told you would need a sinus lift bone graft in order to have an implant placed, please contact Dr. Paris and Dr. Shumaker's office at 970-207-4061 to schedule an evaluation, or ask your general dentist for a referral.
