Occasionally, people develop “bumps” on the gums or other discolorations due to trauma, irritations, or hormonal imbalances during times such as pregnancy. In many instances, these changes are nothing to worry about, but they should be evaluated by a dental professional just to be safe. Certain oral lesions can be cancerous and are best treated in their early stages.

To evaluate these bumps and lesions, Dr. Paris and Dr. Shumaker may need to perform a procedure known as a biopsy. Depending on the size and location of the lesion, we will perform either fine-needle aspiration, brush biopsy, or incisional/excisional biopsy to remove some or all of the lesion for further evaluation by a pathologist. The tissue sample is sent to a laboratory for examination under a microscope by a highly trained Oral Pathologist. In some cases other techniques are used to examine the biopsy, such as immuno-fluoresence. If needed, Dr. Paris and Dr. Shumaker then work with the Oral Pathologist to determine the best treatment for the final diagnosis. The entire process usually takes 1-2 weeks from the time of biopsy to final diagnosis.
If you would like additional information about biopsy procedures or if you have a “gum bump” that you would like examined by a trained specialist, please contact Dr. Paris and Dr. Shumaker's office at 970-207-4061 to schedule a consultation, or ask your general dentist for a referral.
