In some cases of mild to moderate periodontitis, or in post-surgical patients who show recurrent disease, Dr. Paris and Dr. Shumaker may recommend placement of Atridox®, a "locally delivered" antibiotic gel which helps control periodontal disease. This gel is placed after the area has been scaled and root planed to be free of calculus (tartar). It is simply "squirted" below the gum line where it solidifies and dissolves over 10-14 days, releasing bacteria-killing antibiotic to help reduce pocket depth and stop continued bone loss. A major advantage to this material is that the antibiotic is placed only locally, reducing the risk of antibiotic resistance seen with pill form systemic antibiotics.
Atridox® is a great adjunct to managing periodontitis, however it is not appropriate for all cases. Dr. Paris and Dr. Shumakerwill carefully evaluate your case to determine if you are a good candidate for Atridox®. While Atridox® or any locally delivered antibiotic can be a good adjunct to help manage periodontitis, it usually does not replace the need for surgical treatment in most cases. For more information please visit the Atridox website.
