Nicholas D. Shumaker DDS, MS
Meet Dr. Shumaker
Dr. Nick Shumaker is a native of Fort Collins and a graduate of Fort Collins High School. After attending Creighton University, he graduated with honors from the University of Colorado School of Dentistry in 2001 and was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy Dental Corps. Dr. Shumaker provided 10 years of active duty service which included duty stations throughout the world.
Before becoming a Periodontist Dr. Shumaker practiced general dentistry for four years. He completed a one-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency (AEGD) at Naval Medical Center Great Lakes in Chicago, and then served as the dentist onboard the US Navy ship USS Emory S. Land (AS-39) for two years. He then practiced at the Pentagon Tri-Service Dental clinic in Arlington, VA.
In 2008, Dr. Shumaker completed a 3-year residency in Periodontics at the National Naval Medical Center ("The President's Hospital") in Bethesda, Maryland. He then served as the periodontist and dental department head at the Naval Health Clinic Quantico in Quantico, VA and during this time also maintained a part-time private practice limited to periodontics and dental implants in nearby Dumfries, VA. He moved his family and practice back home to Fort Collins in 2011.
Dr. Shumaker is a board-certified Diplomate of the American Board of Peridontology, a distinction shared by less than one third of his peers. Additionally, he is also a board-certified Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists and holds a postgraduate Masters degree in oral biology from The George Washington University. He has published several articles in the field of periodontics in peer reviewed journals.
Dr. Shumaker enjoys spending time with his wife and two children. He is an avid road cyclist and also enjoys hiking, skiing, and home improvement projects. He truly enjoys practicing as a periodontist and is constantly attending continuing education courses to stay current on the latest techniques and knowledge. He strongly believes that oral health is an important component in overall health.
